Football Queensland (FQ) would like to extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of Ian Steele, who sadly passed away last weekend.
One of Queensland’s most respected strikers, Ian played for clubs including Mt Gravatt Hawks FC and Lions FC, as well as representing the state in 1974.
While playing at Mt Gravatt in 1978, Ian won the Rothmans Soccer Gold Medal in a season in which he was also the equal leading premiership goal scorer.
The medal was the official award for the best and fairest football player in the Queensland Soccer Federation’s competition, acknowledging not only a player’s skill but also their integrity and sportsmanship.
After his playing career, Ian continued his association with Mt Gravatt Hawks as a coach at the club, pictured below with his team in the 1988 XXXX League.
Ian will be remembered as a fantastic footballer and coach, and as a great club and family man.
Ian’s funeral will be held today in Cleveland.
