2019 NPL Player of the Year nominees announced

October 8, 2019

Football Queensland (FQ) is pleased to announce the four nominees for the 2019 National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland Player of the Year Award.

Danny Kim, Chris Lucas, Tom Strickland and Alex Smith have been nominated for the NPL Queensland Player of the Year Award, which will be presented at the 2019 Football in Queensland Awards Night next month.

Lions FC midfielder Danny Kim played an integral role in his side securing their second consecutive NPL Queensland Premiership in 2019. In a season where Lions recorded an impressive 13 clean sheets, Kim’s efforts in maintaining this defensive record in the heart of the midfield saw him appear in the Team of the Week on six occasions. Kim was also key to his side’s signature style of playing out from the backs as the link between the team’s defence and attack, and was selected in the 2019 NPL Queensland Team of the Season.

Olympic FC’s Chris Lucas only returned to Queensland this year after four years in the NPL Victoria, but made an impact on his return. The 2019 Golden Boot runner-up scored 27 goals in as many appearances in a fantastic season for his side, featuring in the NPL Queensland Team of the Week on six occasions to secure his spot in the 2019 Team of the Season. Lucas started the season in red-hot for, scoring nine goals in his first six games and secured two hat-tricks during the season to help his side to a top four finish.

Peninsula Power’s Tom Strickland carried his sensational form from last year into the 2019 season and was a key playmaker for his side throughout the year. In his side’s first season in the NPL Queensland following promotion from the Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL), the attacking midfielder scored 10 goals and played a part in a number of his team’s goals to help his side to a top four finish. Featuring in the Team of the Week on seven occasions, Strickland earned a spot in the 2019 Team of the Season after also appearing in the 2018 FQPL Team of the Season.

Olympic FC playmaker Alex Smith was key to his side’s attack in 2019, scoring 18 goals and pushing through injury to help his side qualify for the 2019 NPL Grand Final after a top four finish. The experienced leader, who recently announced his retirement, also provided a number of assists for his teammates throughout the season. Smith’s efforts helped him to an appearance in the equal-most number of Team of the Week squads, featuring eight times and also earning a spot in the 2019 NPL Queensland Team of the Season.

How players are nominated

As per the 2019 Competition Regulations, Player of the Year is awarded based on a combination of referee 3-2-1 votes, Team of the Season votes, and other reasonable justification such as overall team performance or disciplinary record.

A player is ineligible to win the Player of the Year Award if the player has been suspended as a result of receiving a direct red card in a match or as a result of a Disciplinary Committee Hearing or Match Review Panel, as stated in the 2019 Competition Regulations.

The 2019 Football in Queensland Awards Night will be held on Saturday, 2 November in the Grand Windsor Ballroom at the Pullman Hotel in Brisbane.

A variety of awards will be presented on the night, recognising the outstanding achievements of individuals and clubs at both community level and from FQ’s Premier competitions.
