The opening fixtures for Football Queensland’s (FQ) groundbreaking new Kappa Women’s Super Cup have been confirmed following the draw for Rounds 1 and 2.
Brisbane Roar and Westfield Matildas great Clare Polkinghorne joined host Simon Smale to conduct the draw as 55 community and National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland Women’s teams discovered their first opponents.
“With nine regions represented, the Kappa Women’s Super Cup is providing opportunities for aspirational clubs and female participants all over Queensland,” FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said.
“Women and girls are at the forefront of FQ’s vision for football and we are delighted to deliver this unprecedented tournament that connects teams from different areas and competitions, in line with the commitments made in the 2020-2022 Strategic Plan.
“The initiative has come to life with great support from Kappa, FQ’s official apparel partner, in addition to the readiness of Queensland clubs to embrace the potential of women and girls.
“The draw is another exciting milestone on the road to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 and a moment to celebrate in what is the centenary season for women’s football in Queensland.”
The inaugural Kappa Women’s Super Cup begins with regional games in Central Queensland, North Queensland and Far North Queensland in Round 1.
Four Mackay sides will be involved from Round 2, which is also the entry point for clubs across Brisbane, Wide Bay, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and South West Queensland.
One regional team from Central Queensland, North Queensland, Far North Queensland or Mackay is guaranteed to reach the Semi Finals.
Speaking during the draw, Queensland and Australian footballing legend Polkinghorne said she was excited by what the tournament would bring to the state’s competition landscape.
“It gives the girls the opportunity to play more games and compete for another trophy, which is what we always love [as players],” Polkinghorne said.
“Players just need an opportunity to be seen and this is the perfect format for that. Especially the regional areas as well, it gives them the opportunity to be seen.
“Good luck to all the teams – I’m excited to watch!”
