The dust has settled after an absolute ‘goal fest’ in the opening round of the FQPL 3 on the Downs. We take a look at what to expect this weekend in our round preview.
QPL 3 Mens
In the men’s competition, Gatton and Wanderers picked up where they left off, in their Winstanley nail biter, with another 5-4 thriller. In front of a vocal ‘Redback’ crowd, Gatton managed to get the job done and will now be looking to notch back to back wins against a Saints team who would be disappointed they didn’t take maximum points after letting a 2-0 lead slip. These two sides have had some great battles in recent seasons and this is sure to be an enthralling fixture.
Despite the injection of new blood, Highfields were unable to shave any points off a travelling Rovers team. The green and gold get a golden opportunity against Willowburn this Saturday night with their first away game. Willowburn fought back from 2-0 down to register a draw in their opening game, but will want to ensure they stay within touching distance with other clubs. An enticing battle looms between these two.
Wanderers will be hungry to get a win under their belt, but no doubt the Rovers will be confident and buoyed by their attack after slotting five past Highfields. This game could be determined by who wins possession in the middle of the park, with both clubs having two strong midfields.
QPL 3 Womens
The women’s competition threw out a few surprise results and this week could prove to be no different.
After the bye weekend, Gatton face Willowburn at home. Willowburn suffered an early scare by going 3-0 down to Rockville last weekend, but fought back to win the match. They’ll be looking for a better start and Gatton will need to match their enthusiasm and energy for the full 90mins.
After letting a golden opportunity slip last week, Rockville will have their sights firmly on Highfields ‘Green’ to get their season started. Highfields won comfortably against Wanderers, and they’ll need to ensure their defence is rock solid as the Rovers will call upon the attacking prowess of Lockwood and Co. on Sunday morning.
Perhaps the biggest upset on the weekend was Rockville ‘Rubies’ defeating South Toowoomba Hawks. They’ll be looking to register back to back wins against USQFC, who got the chocolates in a tight one against Highfields ‘Gold’ last week. USQFC have plenty of youth and running in their legs so this one could easily be decided late.
Wanderers and Highfields ‘Gold’ round out the second weekend of QPL 3 football. With both sides suffering opening round defeats, they will both be looking to correct their mistakes and improve their performances to claim a valuable 3 points.
