With four games remaining in the women’s competition and three remaining in the men’s, teams from across the FQPL 3 Darling Downs competition will be looking to peak at just the right time in the hunt for silverware.
FQPL 3 Darling Downs Women
Hawks have all but sealed their top four spot last week with a narrow win over 5th placed USQFC. Now with a 7 point buffer they can start to look to build some momentum heading into their finals campaign. They take on 3rd placed Rockville this weekend, and the gap is only 3 points between the two teams. Rovers have the greater goal difference, and no doubt will have done their homework and be ready for anything Hawks dish up. Could be a close one.
Despite not getting the results, Wanderers by all accounts appear to be on the improve each week. They take on Rockville Rubies who are coming off a heavy loss to Willowburn. Wanderers can still see out their season with a couple of wins, and they will see that as a great building block for Season 2023. Meanwhile Rovers will also be eager to see out the season on a positive note.
No doubt disappointed from last week’s narrow loss to Hawks, USQFC will be out to prove a point. They face Highfields Green who themselves are looking to bounce back from a loss. USQFC are still a mathematical chance of making the top four should other results swing their way. But their first priority will be to rediscover some of that early season form and start playing some of their best football.
This game could very well determine the minor premiership and also a FQPL 2 playoff spot. Highfields Gold Vs Willowburn Saturday night, both sides have had a win against each other and will both have the confidence they can get the job done on Saturday night. Which makes for perfect viewing for the neutral and ardent supporters. With a new coach at the helm at Gold, it’ll be interesting to see if he takes a different approach to previous fixtures or whether he sticks to a proven structure.
FQPL 3 Darling Downs Men
With the minor premiership wrapped up, the magpies will have their eyes set on finishing the regular season undefeated. The first obstacle to that rare feat will be Highfields on Saturday Night. Highfields have continued to be the real surprise packet this season and are coming off a gritty 1-1 draw against Rockville. Both teams have played some absolute classics in previous matches and this one promises to be no different.
Gatton have everything to play for and will want to be in control of their own destiny rather than relying on other results over the next few weeks. They take on a Saints outfit who will need to regather and recoup after a 4-0 defeat and a forfeit the following week. In their previous match Saints took the chocolates, but surely the Redbacks will fancy their chances with some desperation and possibly facing a Saints team who may not be at full strength.
The equation is simple for Rockville keep winning, and they play finals football. Conversely if they drop points their destiny may lie in other results. They face a tough test against a Wanderers team who are coming off two back to back wins and will be brimming with confidence. These has all the billings of a semi-final feel and Sunday afternoon at Wanderers will be the place to be.
