Football Queensland (FQ) reaffirms its commitment to uniting football in Queensland through the continued delivery, introduction or expansion of statewide and region-specific cup competitions within the connected football pyramid, connecting football communities and boosting playing opportunities for all Queensland players.
To better understand how the connected football pyramid is reimagining the competitive landscape in Queensland through its cup competitions, watch this video explainer:
“Football Queensland remains strong in its commitment to implementing deliberate strategic measures to elevate regional football, ensuring that initiatives like the Crad Evans, John Bomben, and Filippo Mele Memorial Carnivals in the Northern Conference, and the Intercity Cup in the Central Conference, continue to play a vital role in advancing promising talent and strengthening conference, regional and community bonds,” FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said.
“In 2024, male and female team entry grew across the advanced cup tournaments, including the newly expanded Mitre FQPL Champions League, Kappa Queensland Cup, Australia Cup and Kappa Pro Series, further highlighting the growing appetite and need for connected statewide competitive football.
“Last year, the developmental benefits delivered to players in each region through the additional playing opportunities was evident as we saw the historic debut of Mt Isa teams in the Australia Cup and the largest ever representation of women’s regional teams in the Kappa Women’s Super Cup, with record entry of 70+ teams including 24 teams from regional Queensland.
Unifying Queensland’s men’s and women’s statewide knockout tournaments under one name and building on the success of the Kappa Women’s Super Cup, the Kappa Queensland Cup is open to all Queensland clubs’ senior teams and under 18 teams. In 2024, 245 teams entered the cup competition, delivering an additional 238 games across the football calendar.
“These initiatives and competitions are not just about matches; they are about uniting our football community, strengthening the bonds between all our clubs, and maximising accessibility to the beautiful game.”
“The groundwork for these initiatives was laid through the establishment of the connected football pyramid as part of the Future of Football 2020+ reforms. Since then, new cup competitions introduced in 2023 and 2024 have played a crucial role in fortifying the success of Queensland’s statewide football network.
“These new and established initiatives, including our advanced, community and social carnivals, cups and competitions, aim to provide all our players with maximised match minutes and build stronger connections between teams across the tiers of the football pyramid by facilitating new match-ups that may not have otherwise occurred.
