In 2016, Football Queensland partnered with SBP to conduct Stakeholder (Coaches and Club Administrators) and Participant surveys designed to measure and benchmark the community football experience.
The primary objective of the Participant survey was to understand and benchmark the variables that contribute to player satisfaction with the football experience and impact on loyalty and chances of retention.
One such finding shows that participants have an appetite for more football through non-traditional formats.
Football Queensland is providing this and other key findings to clubs so we can work together to ultimately improve the experience of participants.
WHAT IS NON-TRADITIONAL FOOTBALL?
Non-traditional football includes football products that are not offered during the winter or standard 11-a-side competitive season. This includes 6-a-side competitions and social tournaments where participants can turn up and play without committing to multiple training sessions before a game.
WHAT ARE THE FINDINGS?
Participants have expressed an interest in playing non-traditional football formats such as Summer Football once the competitive season has finished.
- There is a strong appetite for non-traditional football among participants (78%).
- Of the participants who are interested in non-traditional football, the majority would like to play during the off-season.
- The appetite for more football participation is due to the social aspects rather than competition. Team bonding (43%) and social interaction (23%) were among the top participation drivers.
- Equally, of those who are likely to lapse from traditional football (9%), the majority (61%) will continue to play football socially.
WHAT DOES FOOTBALL QUEENSLAND PROVIDE?
Summer Football is one of Football Queensland’s official off-season participation activities that clubs can run during the summer.
Summer Football is six-a-side social football format played on smaller fields.
It is targeted at both current registered players who are interested in keeping active over the off-season as well those who just want to enjoy social sport with friends.
Summer Football welcomes new participants and satisfies the participant base’s hunger for more football while providing an additional revenue stream for community clubs outside of the traditional winter season.
