Cup football returns this Easter weekend with some intriguing match-ups in the FFA Cup and the Kappa Women’s Super Cup, including a David versus Goliath battle.
The weekend kicks off with a Kappa Women’s Super Cup clash between Western Pride and Nambour Yandina United at Ipswich’s Briggs Road Sporting Complex.
Both sides have been sharp in front of goal in recent weeks, with Pride scoring six goals in their opening two NPL games and Nambour Yandina United coming off a 5-0 win in the Sunshine Coast Premier Women’s competition.
Directly after the women’s game, Western Pride’s men’s FQPL 1 side will take on SWQ Thunder in an FFA Cup Western Derby at 7pm.
Toowoomba-based SWQ Thunder have won two and lost one in the FQPL 1, while Western Pride have not yet played a league match this season after their opening round bye was followed by back-to-back washouts.
Meanwhile, another Ipswich-based side, Ripley Valley FC, is preparing for its biggest and most important game to date. The Rippers, who play in Capital League 1, will host former national league champions Brisbane Strikers at Ironbark Park on Saturday evening.
Elsewhere, two of the leading National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland sides Olympic FC and Moreton Bay United will meet at Goodwin Park, just two weeks after Olympic dispatched the Jets 4-1 in their NPL fixture.
With both sides neck-and-neck on the NPL Queensland ladder and Moreton Bay out to avenge their Round 3 loss, this should be a hard-fought encounter. Keep an eye on young-gun Zac Kierpal, who has four goals in as many games for Moreton Bay.
