More than 40 young referees from all ten zones will officiate matches at the 2021 FQ Community Cup on the Sunshine Coast next week.
FQ Senior Referee Development Officer Mark Simon-Green said the five-day junior tournament will provide the up-and-coming referees with invaluable experience.
“The FQ Community Cup is a terrific opportunity for FQ to mentor some of the finest young referees from around the state,” said Simon-Green.
“Queensland is a huge state, and this tournament allows our referee department a chance to work with referees from regional areas.
“Football Queensland will have 48 members of the referee team onsite as we identify talented match officials and provide them with constructive feedback after every game.
“We will be welcoming to the tournament international standard referees Casey Reibelt and Mi Suk Park, both of whom are current FIFA officials on the World Cup candidates’ program for 2023.
“The youngest referee is 13 and the oldest is 16, and for many of them this will be their first taste of refereeing at a major tournament.
“Importantly, the Community Cup will also provide match officials from the Gold Coast to Far North Queensland with the opportunity to network and make friends for life.”
FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said it was great to see the Community Cup return after the tournament was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“The Community Cup is one of the most important events of the calendar and we are excited to be able to bring together young Queensland footballers and referees from across the state,” said Cavallucci.
“This year, we are pleased to be welcoming referees and teams from the Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association (SCCSA) as we continue to unite the game in Queensland.
“Football Queensland is focused on building our referee ranks and ensuring that young match officials have the opportunity to learn from the best in a positive environment.
“The Community Cup is always the biggest cohort of young match officials and represents Football Queensland’s biggest investment in community refereeing.”
The 2021 FQ Community Cup to be held from Monday, 20 September to Friday, 24 September at Maroochydore FC in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council.
