There are just four games being played in Round 17 of the National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland this week, with the Match of the Round tonight featuring Lions FC and Gold Coast United.
The Round 17 Match of the Round can be viewed live and on demand tonight on the FQ website, FQ Facebook and FQ YouTube channel.
After they ended Peninsula Power’s 40-game unbeaten streak last round, Lions are in the box seat to continue closing the gap against the league leaders.
They face Gold Coast United, who have two back-to-back losses against Power and Moreton Bay United to their name, however, both games have been close defeats with Power scoring in the dying minutes while Moreton Bay came from behind with two late goals.
This is exactly what happened last time these two sides met in Round 2 this season, with Marek Madle scoring in the 89th minute to give Lions a 1-0 win over Gold Coast United.
MATCH DETAILS
Lions FC v Gold Coast United
Wednesday, 22 May, 7:30pm
Lions Stadium
Brisbane City v Sunshine Coast FC
Six points above the relegation zone, Brisbane City are sitting more comfortably on the NPL Queensland ladder after picking up four consecutive wins. They will host Sunshine Coast who sit in the relegation zone and will be desperate to keep their NPL dreams alive in the next 13 games.
Olympic FC v Magpies Crusaders
It’s been a rollercoaster week for the Mackay team with the departure of their head coach and inaugural captain Michael Lyall from the club. Magpies haven’t won a game since Round 7 and sit alongside Sunshine Coast and Western Pride in the relegation zone. They come up against fourth-placed Olympic, who will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run to six games.
Brisbane Strikers v Redlands United
After a slow start to the season, Strikers have kicked into gear ahead of the second half of the season and haven’t lost a game since Round 13. The team has gone from strength to strength while Andrew Pengelly has been firing up front. It’s been a tough two losses for Redlands as they sit just above the relegation zone. The last time these two sides faced each other, Strikers came from behind to take the three points so the team from Cleveland will be hoping for a different result this time.
Players to watch:
Danny Kim (Lions FC): He played a part in the build up to both goals Lions scored in their win over Power.
Jean Carlos Solorzano (Brisbane City): His two goals in the space of six minutes helped secure a 4-0 win against Redlands last round. The former A-League striker is currently the top scorer for his side with 10 goals this season.
Kado Aoci (Redlands United): The veteran forward only joined the club in March but has already formed a solid partnership with Shuto Kuboyama.
