The race for the Premiership is heating up in Round 17 of the Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL) with surprising results seeing teams close the gap on league leaders Sunshine Coast Wanderers.
However, the Wanderers could wrap up the title this weekend when they host Capalaba FC.
The FQPL Match of the Round will be available live and on demand on the FQ website, FQ Facebook and FQ YouTube.
After winning their mid-week game against Mitchelton, Wanderers have the chance to lift the Premiership if they can overcome Capalaba.
It’s a tight top three with just six points separating first and third and only two rounds remaining.
Capalaba had last weekend off, while Wanderers have played in two catch-up games in the past week, including a shock draw with Southside Eagles on Wednesday night.
The last time these two sides met was in Round 2 this season, with Wanderers coming away with a 3-1 win after all four goals were scored in the first half.
Capalaba are yet to beat Wanderers in the FQPL with the Sunshine Coast side winning their first ever meeting back in Round 11 last season, while they’ve also had a 1-1 draw in Round 24 of 2018.
MATCH DETAILS
Sunshine Coast Wanderers v Capalaba FC
Sunday, 28 July, 4pm
Ballinger Park
Other key matches:
Logan Lightning v Souths United
Lightning will be desperate not to drop points when they face Souths so they can stay in touch with Wanderers and maintain their current second spot on the ladder. Finishing second on the table could give the team the first week off from finals and a home advantage in the second week. Souths aren’t to be underestimated though, having beaten Capalaba and battling it out with Wanderers in a 6-4 loss in recent weeks.
Rochedale Rovers v Mitchelton FC
Fourth will host fifth as Rochedale Rovers welcome Mitchelton FC to Underwood Park on Saturday night. Both sides will be looking for a strong finish to the regular season ahead of finals. They’ve both only won two of their last five and lost their games last round, so this match is set to be a tight one.
Players to watch:
Jed Brown (Logan Lightning): The Logan forward is leading the Golden Boot race with 18 goals for the season after scoring the winner in their catch-up match with Rochedale Rovers last weekend.
Jay Joo (Souths United): The defender has made two consecutive FQPL Team of the Week appearances thanks to his consistent efforts for Souths.
Ryan Ono (Capalaba FC): After having the weekend off, Ono will be hoping to score in back-to-back games as the Bulldogs play in a massive match this weekend.
