Football Queensland (FQ) has today released the 2021 competition draws for all National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland and Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL) divisions and age groups.
“This exciting new season represents an important stage in our Future of Football 2020+ Competition Reform journey,” FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said.
“In the Opportunities Paper released in September, and in the 2020-2022 Strategic Plan, FQ highlighted the importance of connected competitions and providing quality pathways for aspirational clubs and players.
“FQ is delivering on these commitments with the introduction of the new FQPL 2 to connect the football pyramid for the first time, and will continue to take steps to evolve the pyramid in the season ahead.
“2021 sees the expansion and restructuring of the NPL Women’s competition to strengthen our competition frameworks and pathways for women and girls as we build towards the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
“With a higher volume of like-v-like and best-v-best games additionally driving improved technical development outcomes for juniors, there are top to bottom reforms coming into effect in 2021 which are taking the game forward.
“This is a great time for the community to enjoy and celebrate a full season of football after uniting amid some challenging circumstances in 2020.”
The season officially commences on Friday, 5 March with the Football Foundation Cup clash between reigning NPL Men’s Premiers Peninsula Power and newly promoted Logan Lightning.
NPL Boys and Girls games begin that same weekend, before FQPL 1 and the NPL Women’s kick off on 12 March.
The eight-team FQPL 2 gets underway on 19 March.
“By increasing our resources, engaging with clubs and using the competition management system to its full potential, we have been able to deliver equitable draws across all competitions which still cater for the preferences and uniqueness of our clubs where possible,” said Dan Birrell, Senior Manager – Participation, Clubs & Community.
“FQ has factored club feedback into developing these draws to provide the best possible outcomes for overall participant experience, product visibility, live streaming and referee availability.
“It is a delicate balancing act, but with the support of clubs we are excited to again be sharing quality NPL and FQPL football with all Queenslanders from the pitch to the lounge room on NPL.TV.”
