Football Queensland (FQ) today confirmed it has received application requests from 27 clubs from across South East Queensland for entry into the new transitional eight-club Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL) 2 competition to commence in 2021.
“The interest from clubs is overwhelming, positive and entirely consistent with the feedback FQ received through the Future of Football 2020+ consultations and NPL Review,” FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said.
“The clear message received throughout that process was that clubs and participants are aspirational and are seeking a clear football pyramid with connected pathways that extend from bottom to top.
“FQPL 2 acts as the crucial bridge between local premier men’s competitions and a reformed NPL Queensland and FQPL structure.
“The high level of interest demonstrates that FQPL 2 delivers on club expectations for a reduced compliance environment where they can build capacity, strengthen off-field operations and become ‘promotion-ready’.
“It opens up exciting opportunities for clubs in Brisbane, the South West, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast to connect to a much bigger football story.
“This is a significant first step towards connecting the football pyramid across the state and it’s important we continue to investigate optimal models that meet the Queensland football community’s clear demand for regional competition conferences.”
FQPL 2 applications remain open until close of business Monday, 16 November 2020.
