After a number of upsets last round, the Football Queensland Premier League is starting to get even more interesting as teams fight for their spot in the top six.
In Round 13 of the FQPL this weekend, two of the most consistent teams in the league in Capalaba FC and Logan Lightning will need to recover from last weekend’s shock losses as they continue their quest for promotion come season’s end.
Sunshine Coast Wanderers meanwhile will look to maintain their spot at the top of the ladder as they host Logan Lightning in the Match of the Round on Sunday afternoon, which can be viewed live and on demand on the FQ website, FQ Facebook and FQ YouTube.
With last week’s dominant display against Holland Park Hawks, Sunshine Coast Wanderers extended their winning streak to four games to jump from third to first, thanks to some surprise results in other games.
The hosts will come into this game off the back of two big score lines, recording a 6-1 win against Holland Park last round and putting another six goals past Souths United in their Round 3 make-up game the week prior.
Logan Lightning will travel to the Coast having lost their last two games, including last week’s shock loss against second-last Southside Eagles, and will need to find their winning form again if they are to challenge the high-flying Sunshine Coast side.
Last time the sides met in Round 6 this year, Logan recorded a come-from-behind 3-2 victory thanks to three late goals in the second half, having gone into the break 2-0 down.
MATCH DETAILS:
Sunshine Coast Wanderers v Logan Lightning
Sunday, 23 June, 4pm
Ballinger Park
Other key matches:
Wolves FC v Souths United
While both teams have struggled to find consistency this year, Souths United will bring a huge amount of confidence into their clash against Wolves FC after their upset victory over ladder leaders Capalaba FC last weekend. With only one point separating the two teams, the visitors will no doubt look to string together a number of wins off the back of last week’s result to remain in contention for finals football.
Ipswich Knights v Mitchelton
Both Ipswich Knights and Mitchelton FC will be eager to cement their top six spot for a play at finals football come season’s end, and with just one point currently separating the two sides, this weekend’s clash should be a competitive one. Mitchelton will come into the match following a disappointing draw against Wolves last round and will be hungry for the three points, having lost to the hosts 2-0 when the sides last met in Round 6 this year.
Players to watch:
Salomon Lukonga (Souths United): The former Western Pride forward has only played four games for Souths but has already scored two goals for the side, including the 93rd minute winner in last weekend’s surprise victory over ladder leaders Capalaba FC.
Jeremy Stewart (Sunshine Coast Wanderers): With a double in his side’s 6-1 win last round earning him a spot in the Round 12 Team of the Week, Stewart is a player who can make an impact as Wanderers take on Logan Lightning this weekend.
Tim Morgan (Southside Eagles): Morgan’s first half brace helped Southside Eagles to their upset win over Logan Lightning last round, and he will need to find the same form if he is to lead his side to another victory this weekend against Rochedale Rovers.
