Early leaders to be tested in Round 2 of NPL Women’s

February 27, 2020

The action-packed opening weekend of the National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland Women’s 2020 season was just the beginning.

As early leaders are set to be tested while others look to shake off week one hurdles, last week’s stunning goals and clutch saves were just a taste of what’s to come as we head into Round 2.

Don’t miss a second of the action as you can catch all First Grade NPL Women’s matches lives and on demand on the FQ YouTube channel.

Feature Match: Lions FC v The Gap

Two hotly-tipped title contenders are set to battle it out this Saturday night as Lions FC host The Gap in our Round 2 Feature Match, live streamed to the FQ Facebook page.

The Gap showcased their enviable firepower over the weekend with no less than four players on the score sheet following their energetic 7-3 win away to SWQ Thunder in Toowoomba.

Lions on the other hand will be roaring to get on the pitch after Souths United forfeited prior to their opening round clash last Sunday.

No strangers to bagging a few goals themselves, Lions will be looking to key forwards Mariel Hecher and Tegan Riding to level the playing field in what’s sure to be a cracking game.

After securing the Premiership-Championship double in 2019, Lions will be eager to get their season off to a winning start as they challenge for the title again in 2020.

Other Matches to Watch:

Eastern Suburbs v Mitchelton FC

Eastern Suburbs will be looking to get a win on the board as they host Mitchelton FC at Heath Park this Saturday.

Easts extended their regular season undefeated streak from 2019 to 10 matches on the weekend following their Round 1 draw against Gold Coast United.

In a thrilling game that saw four first half goals and some cracking saves, Easts’ Georgina Amos scored a brace to level the scores after her side went 2-0 down to the visitors within the first 20 minutes.

Mitchelton meanwhile will be looking to make it two from two in 2020 following their 4-0 victory over a visiting Western Pride last Saturday.

With a number of their influential pre-season signings in their inventory, Mitchelton will be full of confidence heading into this match as the likes of Emilie Rebelo and Sofie Persson are set to leave their mark on the NPL Women’s competition.

Capalaba FC v SWQ Thunder

Skie Hanifin will be hoping his squad continues the momentum from last weekend’s 2-1 win when Capalaba FC host SWQ Thunder on Sunday.

Jemima Moore put the Bulldogs ahead last Saturday during the hotly-contested match against QAS at Logan Metro Sports Complex. QAS found a much needed equaliser through Ellen Gett in the 76th before India Kubin scored a late winner, guaranteeing all three points.

Thunder however will be looking to shake off their 7-3 defeat at the hands of The Gap as Golden Boot hopeful Louise Rolfe is poised to better last week’s hat-trick effort.

Tiarne Petterwood (Logan Lightning): Petterwood scored four goals in her side’s dominant Round 1 performance and will be key for her side against Souths this weekend.

Laini Freier (Gap FC): Freier earned a spot in the first Team of the Week for the 2020 season after scoring four goals in Gap FC’s Round 1 victory.

Madison Moy (Mitchelton FC): Moy was one of Mitchelton’s best in their Round 1 clash, and will need to continue her form as her side comes up against Easts in Round 2.
