Football Queensland is excited to announce the FQ School Futsal Championships, a new premier futsal competition for secondary schools launching across a number of regions in Queensland in 2023.
The FQ School Futsal Championships will deliver a high-quality, school-based futsal competition to support the development of futsal programs within Queensland schools.
“Football Queensland is committed to growing the game of futsal throughout the state and is delighted to provide even more Queenslanders with an opportunity to participate with the launch of the FQ School Futsal Championships,” FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said.
“Following the release of the 2020-2022 Futsal Strategy, Football Queensland has been working towards the implementation of school futsal competitions as part of an increased investment in Queensland secondary schools.
“In addition to the introduction of the new school-based competition in 2023 which provides an opportunity for schools to represent their respective Queensland School Sport (QSS) region across Metro, Darling Downs, South Coast, Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay, we’re also looking forward to helping schools build their futsal programs through the delivery of coaching and referee courses in each school region to improve the capability of players, coaches and referees.”
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to revolutionise futsal as a sport in our schools through a significant investment by Football Queensland and the Queensland Government as part of the School Sport Program to promote and develop all aspects of futsal including competing, coaching and officiating,” FQ Manager – Futsal Vince Sciacca said.
“The FQ School Futsal Championships will allow us to take futsal to the next level within our schools and help provide a pathway for schools to advance through State and National School Futsal Championships as they play with FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game rules using the IFAB Laws of the Game, with full length competitive games, qualified referees and time outs which provide a significant tactical element to coaching.
“The response to date has been phenomenal and it is clear that schools are looking for long-term sustainable futsal programs as the sport not only gains popularity, but also evolves to a higher standard through better coaching and player development programs delivered in Queensland schools.”
The FQ School Futsal Championships will run across two stages, with boys and girls in years 7-12 initially competing within their own QSS region to be crowned Regional Champions.
The winner and runner-up schools from each region will qualify for the second stage of the FQ School Futsal Championships, where they will compete against other qualifying schools and vie for the title of State Champions.
Schools participating in the FQ School Futsal Championships will also qualify to represent Queensland at the proposed School Futsal National Championships in late 2023.
Expressions of interest are now open for schools interested in being part of the FQ School Futsal Championships in 2023.
