Refereeing is a great way to stay active and involved in the world game.
Queensland has a long and proud history of producing some of Australia’s best referees. Members of Queensland’s football community have officiated at the top level, both domestically and internationally, including in the Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League, AFC Champions League, AFC Asian Cup and FIFA World Cup.
Whether you want to referee at local level, remain active in the game following injury or retirement or make a career out of refereeing, Football Queensland is dedicated to making your journey as rewarding as possible.
Follow these few simple steps and you will be on your way to becoming a match official!
1. Take the online Laws of the Game test (FREE)
This is a free online training module which provides a basic introduction to the Laws of the Game and their interpretations. Successful candidates will receive a certificate identifying they have demonstrated awareness in the Laws of the Game, and have the necessary knowledge to attend the Level 4 Referee course. The online test takes roughly 45 mins.
2. Register for a Level 4 Referee course
Level 4 is the entry level course that will build on your knowledge gained from the Laws of the Game test.
The course runs for 5-6 hours and there is no assessment required and you must be a minimum of 13 years old to attend. There is a $50 fee to complete the course.
3. Register as a Referee to Play Football
To complete your registration as a qualified referee, you must register to your zone via Play Football.
There is a registration fee of $59 for Juniors and $98.50 for Seniors. These fees apply to first year referees only.
Please note: you must search for your local zone in the Play Football directory.
4. Receive your Referee essentials
Once you have completed the level 4 Referee course and registered to Play Football, you’ll be eligible to receive your:
- First year registration pack (teal shirt, shorts, socks, flags, cards, book and whistle)
- Pink armband (if you are under 18)
5. Check out the official Referee Website
The website features an extensive video analysis library, appointments, the latest referee news and From The Third team blog articles.
Referees from all around the state will be able to access educational material to gain a deeper understanding of refereeing our beautiful game.
6. Join the Football Queensland Referees Facebook Group
Stay in touch with fellow referees from across the state in the Football Queensland Referees Facebook group.
