The Westfield Matildas will head to France next month to take on the world’s best at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and to celebrate, Football Queensland (FQ) will be hosting Yeh The Girls Galas across the state!
Between June 7 and July 7, Yeh The Girls Galas will be held in nine different zones across Queensland, giving women and girls the opportunity to give football a go in a social setting with their daughters, mothers, sisters and friends, regardless of whether they’ve played before.
The free gala events will invite 12-15 year old girls and women (15+) to bring a female companion along for a social 5-a-side mini tournament, where fun and participation is the key focus.
FQ Women & Girls Development Officer Kerry Hammersley said the gala events are the perfect opportunity for girls to get a taste of football in a social setting.
“I’d love to see as many women and girls as possible coming together to share a positive experience, to be active, to play football and most importantly to have fun!” Hammersley said.
“Not everyone has had the opportunity to give football a go and sometimes the thought of playing in an 11-a-side competition can be quite daunting, particularly if you haven’t played before.
“The Yeh the Girls Galas present us with a chance to try the game or to help to introduce someone new to the sport. We look forward to seeing you there!”
Brisbane, Cairns, Central Queensland, Gold Coast, Mackay, South West Queensland, Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Wide Bay will all host Yeh The Girls Gala events throughout the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The two hour celebration galas will be open to women and girls, with players from all levels of the game encouraged to register and bring along a friend, sister, mum, aunty or someone that they know would like to give football a go.
