Football Queensland (FQ) cancelled the National Premier Leagues Women’s (NPLW) Round 18 fixture between Gold Coast United and Mitchelton FC on Wednesday, 3 July after being alerted late Wednesday afternoon to notification on the Gold Coast City Council website advising of the closure of the Coplick Family Sports Park venue.
After consultation with FQ’s insurers, postponement of the match was advised to mitigate the potential risk of liability.
FQ notes that a National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland game was played at the same venue on the previous evening. Had FQ been notified of the Gold Coast City Council closure prior to that match, the same course of action would have been undertaken and the match postponed.
While clubs were notified of the postponement as promptly as possible, FQ understands the disappointment and frustration of players, officials and spectators due to the late notice of the postponement and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
FQ will continue to work closely with the Gold Coast City Council, its insurers and member clubs to ensure the best course of action is undertaken when similar circumstances arise.
A rescheduled time for the NPLW match between Gold Coast United and Mitchelton will be communicated once it has been confirmed.
