Two Queensland players have been named by Australia’s U-17 Men’s National Football Team Head Coach Trevor Morgan in the 21 player squad that will represent Australia at the forthcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019, to be held between October 26 and November 17.
Brisbane Roar FC duo Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Izaack Powell will travel with the Joeys on Monday, 7 October to spend twelve days preparing for the tournament in Santiago, Chile before they leave for Brazil on Saturday, 19 October.
Both players were part of the Brisbane Roar FC side that claimed the 2018/19 Foxtel Y-League title earlier this year.
Powell also played in six Hyundai A-League matches throughout the 2018/19 season for the Roar, while Courtney-Perkins started in all of the club’s FFA Cup matches in 2019.
Morgan said he was excited to see how the players showcase their abilities on the world stage.
“We have selected a squad that has depth, flexibility and a strong culture of doing things to the best of their ability,” Morgan said.
“The level of experience is building with six international matches this year and several boys training with senior players at Hyundai A-League clubs. This is a positive sign as they prepare for the biggest tournament possible for their age group but also for the longer term to have a career as a senior professional.”
Australia’s first FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019 match will take place on Saturday, 26 October against Ecuador at the Estadio Olimpico in Goiania.
The Joeys will take on Hungary in the same city and stadium three days later, before shifting base to Brasilia (Gama) for the third and final group game against Nigeria at the Estadio Bezerrao on Friday, 1 November.
The top two teams from each group, plus the four best third-placed teams will advance to the Round of 16.
