Clubs bolster squads as preparations for 2020 season begin

November 14, 2019

As the countdown to the 2020 season begins, National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland, National Premier Leagues Women’s (NPLW) Queensland and Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL) clubs are making big moves; let’s take a look at some of the signings already announced.

Keep up to date with signings as they are announced via the FQ Transfer Centre page.

NPL Queensland’s Olympic FC and NPLW side Logan Lightning have bolstered their squad ahead of the 2020 season with a number of early signings, while FQPL clubs Western Pride and Logan Lightning are leading the pack in their bid for promotion.

A host of coach signings have also been announced, with notable mentions including Logan Lightning’s Royce Brownlie signing with NPL Queensland side Moreton Bay United, and former Gold Coast United coach Rick Coghlan joining Logan Lightning in the FQPL, bringing with him a number of United players.

NPLW Head Coach Skie Hanifin meanwhile will be making the move to Capalaba FC for next season after leading Moreton Bay United to the Grand Final in 2019.

In a huge coup for NPL Queensland side Gold Coast United, 2017 Golden Boot winner Sam Smith joins the club from cross-town rivals Gold Coast Knights.

The former Knights captain had a successful season with the club, helping his side to victory in the 2019 NPL Queensland Grand Final in their first season in the league. Smith scored 12 goals in 25 matches to feature in the Team of the Week twice in 2019.

Smith will be joined by former Knights teammate Euan Thum-Davidson in joining local Gold Coast rivals United for the 2020 season.

In the NPLW, 2018 Golden Boot winner Meaghan McElligott leaves 2019 Grand Finalists Moreton Bay United after just over a season with the club. McElligott will be heading south to join the ranks of Logan Lightning alongside a number of former teammates.

McElligott played a crucial role in her side’s frontline and helped secure their place in the 2019 Grand Final. She scored 19 goals across 24 matches and made an impressive four appearances in the NPLW Team of the Week this year.

Jets captain Kristi New and fellow Moreton Bay teammates Lauren Spreadborough and Teleya Reynolds will join McElligott in making the switch to Logan Lightning for the 2020 NPLW season.

Logan Lightning has also made big moves ahead of the FQPL season, announcing a multitude of key signings;  none bigger than Conor Smith, one of four former Gold Coast United players linking up with coach Rick Coghlan.

The creative English midfielder was influential for his side in the 2019 NPL, scoring three goals and featuring in the Team of the Week on four occasions.

Smith is one of six signings already confirmed as Logan Lightning set out to secure promotion in the 2020 season.

In other notable signings, former Western Pride captain Cameron Crestani joins Peninsula Power, Lions FC shotstopper Cassandra Zaffina makes a move south to former club Gold Coast United while FQPL sides Mitchelton FC and Rochedale Rovers add international calibre with signings from Germany and Italy respectively.

Keep up to date with signings as they are announced via the FQ Transfer Centre page.
