Former Queensland referee Peter Green has been presented with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referees Memento Award at the AFC Refereeing Conference 2019, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last week.

Green received the award at the opening ceremony alongside seven other match officials who were also honoured for their outstanding service to raising refereeing standards in Asia.

369 participants were in attendance at the AFC Refereeing Conference 2019, including 65 referee assessors and 304 referees and assistant referees.

A number of Queensland match officials also attended the two-day conference, including Renae Coghill, Lara Lee and Casey Reibelt.

AFC General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John, who opened the ceremony, acknowledged the progress and hard work of those in attendance.

“I’m proud to say that our Asian referees are among the best in the world,” Windsor John said.

“For the first time ever, we bring together elite referees – both men and women – and assistant referees as well as referee assessors in one room.”

One of Australia’s most well-respected referees, Green’s award adds to the accolades he has achieved throughout his refereeing career, which began as a teenager.

Rising up the refereeing ranks, Green became a match official in the National Soccer League (NSL) in Australia, and later in the Hyundai A-League where he officiated two Grand Finals in 2013 and 2014, winning Referee of the Year in both those seasons.

An inaugural member of the Hyundai A-League Video Assistant Referee (VAR) panel, his successful national and international career saw Green officiate in the AFC Champions League, AFC Asian Cup, FFA Cup and FIFA World Cup qualification matches before retiring in July of this year.

Following his retirement from refereeing, the FIFA referee took on a role as a referees coach with Football Federation Australia.
