Football Queensland (FQ) and Magpies Crusaders FC have today confirmed that the ongoing participation of Magpies Crusaders in the 2020 National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland Men’s competition will not be possible.
The decision follows a lengthy assessment of the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on Magpies Crusaders’ participation in the NPL Men’s competition, including limitations and uncertainty regarding air travel, timing and associated costs, and the ability to maintain social distancing rules. These unknown factors were unresolved in May when plans were finalised for the season’s recommencement.
“The challenges for both Football Queensland and our clubs across Queensland in recent months have been unprecedented, and unfortunately some restrictions still remain which have an impact on our 2020 competitions,” FQ Chief Executive Officer Robert Cavallucci said.
“While these restrictions have affected clubs in varying ways, they have presented significant challenges in relation to the ongoing participation of Magpies Crusaders in the NPL Men’s competition.
“It is disappointing that Magpies Crusaders will be unable to participate for the remainder of the 2020 season, however I want to reiterate that the decision is a direct consequence of restrictions associated with COVID-19, and is not in relation to the club’s licence conditions.”
Magpies Crusaders FC Chairman Barry Jansen said the club remained committed to competing in the NPL Men’s competition moving forward.
“While everyone at the club is extremely disappointed to be unable to complete the 2020 season, COVID-19 has unfortunately presented a number of challenges that make our ongoing participation in the competition this year unfeasible,” Jansen said.
“We want to thank all our participants, members and fans for their ongoing support, and look forward to returning to the NPL Queensland competition in 2021.”
The 2020 NPL Queensland Men’s competition will consist of 13 teams for the remainder of the season, with more information to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
