Two unmissable top four clashes headline Round 15 of the NPL Women’s

September 25, 2020

Two unmissable matches will headline Round 15 of the National Premier Leagues (NPL) Women’s competition this weekend as first hosts second and third takes on fourth.

Catch the two top four clashes and all other Round 15 matches live on NPL.TV.

Feature Matches:

Capalaba FC v Gold Coast United

Gold Coast United will travel to take on Capalaba FC in what is set to be a fascinating Round 15 clash this weekend, with both sides looking to bounce back from recent defeats.

It will be three meets four and looks set to be a close one if recent results are anything to go by, as both look to cement their spot in the top four and in the race to finals contention.

SWQ Thunder brought an end to Capalaba FC’s seven-game winning run, handing this weekend’s hosts a 2-1 defeat thanks to a 67th minute Louise Rolfe winner.

Capalaba had displayed a fine run of form before that as they recorded seven consecutive wins, the side not conceding a goal since a Round 6 2-1 victory over Logan Lightning last month.

Gold Coast United meanwhile were on a winning run of their own until just recently, having secured six straight wins since the resumption of the season, and nine if including three victories prior to the break.

In recent weeks the Gold Coast side handed defeats to QAS, Gap FC and current ladder leaders Lions FC before falling to a 3-2 loss in their most recent match, two weeks ago against Eastern Suburbs.

With two games in hand and just two points behind this weekend’s opponents Capalaba, Gold Coast United have everything to play for as they look to claw their way back to the top of the ladder. Last time the two sides met, Gold Coast United recorded a 2-0 win in Round 4 earlier this year.

Lions FC v Logan Lightning

Current ladder leaders Lions FC will welcome Logan Lightning for a must-watch top two Round 15 clash this weekend.

The hosts have won their last four, against Gap FC, SWQ Thunder, Souths United and Mitchelton, scoring 15 and conceding just two goals across those matches.

Their last taste of defeat came late last month in a Round 5 2-0 encounter with Gold Coast United, who handed the title contenders just their second loss of the season.

Lions’ Round 15 opponents Logan Lightning have secured three wins in their last four, including consecutive victories against Souths United, Moreton Bay United and Eastern Suburbs in recent weeks which followed a Round 6 2-1 loss to Capalaba a month ago.

Last time these two sides met, Lions claimed the three points in a thrilling 5-3 win in Round 4 of the NPL Women’s back in March.

Recent form makes it hard to split the two heading into the weekend, but Lions will no doubt be determined to secure their spot atop the ladder with a win this round. Logan Lightning shouldn’t be underestimated though – one thing’s for sure, this match is one not to miss this weekend.

Another Key Match:

QAS v Souths United

QAS will come up against Souths United in a Round 15 encounter this weekend as they look to build some momentum for the remainder of the season.

The QAS side secured a 4-1 win in their last match, a mid-week Round 8 clash with Mitchelton FC last Wednesday night before a bye over the weekend.

That win was their only one in their last four games, so this weekend’s hosts should be eager to go back-to-back with a victory over Souths.

Souths will need to turn around their form if they are to challenge QAS this round though, having recorded three consecutive losses against Logan Lightning, Eastern Suburbs and Lions FC in recent weeks, scoring just one goal in the process.

Their last win came in Round 6 at the end of last month, when they put five goals past SWQ Thunder to secure a 5-0 victory.

QAS and Souths United last met back in March in Round 4, a 2-2 draw ensuring the sides had to settle for just a point.

Players to Watch:

Demi Robins (Logan Lightning): Robins’ Round 13 performance earned the defender a spot in the Team of the Week, and she will need to be at her best if they are to hold off the ladder leaders this weekend.

Louise Rolfe (SWQ Thunder): Rolfe helped Thunder to an upset victory against Capalaba FC last round, scoring her eighth goal in 13 matches to book her place in the Team of the Week.

Tegan Riding (Lions FC): Currently second in the Golden Boot race, Riding has scored a stunning 14 goals in 15 matches to help her side to the top of the table, including two last weekend against Gap FC.
