Logan Lightning looking for win in crucial top four clash in Round 17 of the NPL Women’s

November 6, 2020

An epic top four clash will headline Round 17 of the National Premier Leagues (NPL) Women’s this weekend as Capalaba FC take on Logan Lightning, while Eastern Suburbs will continue their push for a top four finish.

Feature Match:

Capalaba FC v Logan Lightning

Three will welcome four as Capalaba FC and Logan Lightning clash in a Feature Match that could prove crucial to Logan’s chances of a finals finish.

The hosts will come into the side on the back of three straight wins against Eastern Suburbs, Mitchelton FC and Souths United, scoring 10 goals across these three matches.

A 91st minute Kaitlyn Torpey goal last week against Easts helped Capalaba to their third straight win, following victories against Mitchelton FC and Souths United in previous weeks.

The side who sit comfortably in third scored 10 goals in those three wins, and they will look to extend this winning run to four matches this weekend against Logan.

Logan Lightning meanwhile need to get back in the winners’ circle this round if they’re to secure a top four spot come finals.

With just three matches left to play and currently on equal points with fifth-placed Eastern Suburbs, the visitors should have an appetite for victory but will have to work hard against an in-form Capalaba side.

Logan haven’t won a game since their Round 13 clash with Souths United in September, and come into the weekend off the back of a 2-0 loss to Gap FC after the match was abandoned early due to weather conditions.

Other recent results include a 1-1 draw with QAS, a 1-0 loss to Gold Coast United and a 7-1 loss to Lions FC.

Last time these two sides met, Capalaba secured a 2-1 win in their Round 6 clash. Can Logan get back to winning ways this weekend to set themselves on the path to finals football? Only time will tell, but regardless it’s set to be a must-watch encounter.

Other Key Matches:

Gold Coast United v Gap FC

Current ladder leaders Gold Coast United can strengthen their title chances this weekend with a win against Gap FC in Round 17 of the NPL Women’s.

The Gold Coast side have won their last six matches, including a 4-1 mid-week win over SWQ Thunder.

They remain three points ahead of Lions FC with a game in hand, and will fancy their chances against Gap FC this weekend as they continue their Premiership quest.

Gap FC meanwhile had the bye last round following a 2-0 win against Logan Lightning in Round 8.

That win was their first in four matches after they fell to three straight defeats at the hands of Mitchelton FC, Souths United and Eastern Suburbs.

Gold Coast United recorded a 4-2 win over Gap FC last time the two sides met, and will look to make it two from two this weekend as they clash on the coast.

QAS v Eastern Suburbs

Eastern Suburbs will continue their push for a top four finish as they take on QAS this weekend.

Hosts QAS will be keen to get back to winning ways after recording a draw and two losses in their last three matches.

Their last win came against Souths United in a Round 15 September clash.

The stakes will be high for this weekend’s opponents Easts, who sit in fifth on equal points as fourth-placed Logan Lightning with just two games left to play.

Following consecutive wins to Lions FC, SWQ Thunder and Gap FC, the side fell to a disappointing 2-1 loss against Capalaba FC last weekend in a tough clash.

Last time these two sides met, Eastern Suburbs recorded a 3-1 win in Round 6 of the NPL Women’s back in August.

Players to Watch:

Charlotte Farmer (Gold Coast United): The young midfielder earned herself a place in the October Players of the Month line-up after a run of impressive performances for the ladder leaders.

Harkana Dixon (Eastern Suburbs): Dixon has been in fine form for Eastern Suburbs and could prove crucial in her side’s quest for a top four finish.

Meaghan McElligott (Logan Lightning): Logan’s leading goalscorer will need to find the back of the net this weekend if she is to help her side to a crucial win against Capalaba.
