Eight teams have booked their spot in the Quarter Finals of the Kappa Women’s Super Cup after the Round of 16 drew to a close this week.
Brothers Townsville were the first club to secure their Quarter Final spot thanks to a 2-0 win over Mareeba FC in the Round of 32 in yet another clinical performance from Brothers, who have been sharp in front of the goal throughout the tournament.
Virginia United FC bid farewell to the knockout competition after Western Pride snatched a win from the hosts in a nail-biting clash. Finishing one-all after 90 minutes, the game was pushed to an action-packed extra time where Kate Webb bagged a double for Pride before a Virginia own goal secured the Ipswich side a 4-1 win and a spot in the Quarter Finals.
It was yet another convincing win for third-placed NPL Women’s side Souths United in an all-Brisbane Round of 16 clash against Mitchelton FC, in which Souths netted four goals and conceded zero.
NPL Women’s ladder leaders Lions FC cruised into the Quarter Finals with an 8-0 win over The Gap FC, thanks in part to a solid performance from hat-trick scorer Shea Connors.
Meanwhile, Logan Lightning registered the biggest win of the Round of 16, defeating the last remaining Wide Bay team United Park Eagles 10-0. To the enjoyment of Logan’s home crowd, captain Brittney Lacek scored a hat-trick before half time and will no doubt look to snare more goals as they enter the final rounds of the competition.
The action continued on the coast, with Sunshine Coast Premier League side Maroochydore FC putting on a dominant performance against Gold Coast Metro Division 1 team Palm Beach SC to secure an 8-0 win in the inter-zone clash. The Gold Coast side came into the Round of 16 with plenty of confidence after a 3-0 victory against Across the Waves, but it didn’t prove enough and a convincing win from the Maroochydore team may be a sign of things to come for the remaining rounds of competition.
Alongside them, a thrilling regional clash saw Central FC scrape through to the Quarter Finals with a 3-2 win against Mackay Lions. The Central side was led by captain Kallie Peurifoy, who brought plenty of fight and secured a goal within the first minute of the match.
Wrapping up the Round of 16, NPL Women’s side Capalaba FC handed league opponents Olympic FC a 5-0 defeat last night, soaring through to the Quarter Finals thanks to a Larissa Crummer double.
The Kappa Women’s Super Cup Quarter Final matches will be held between Friday, 16 July and Sunday, 18 July.
