Football Queensland has today confirmed the players who will represent the state at the 2022 National Youth Championships (NYC) for Girls in September, with FQ Academy players from across the five regional centres to feature.
An Under 14 team and two Under 16 sides will travel to Coffs Harbour to compete in the national tournament which will be held from Monday, 19 September to Friday, 23 September.
“It is fantastic to see the return of the National Youth Championships this year after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19,” FQ State Technical Director Gabor Ganczer said.
“72 young Queensland players from across regional and South East Queensland have been identified through the team selection process including 48 squad members and 24 shadow players who will represent the state across three teams.
“This year we’re delighted to have assembled an additional Under 16 team which has provided an opportunity for some of our most talented regional players to be selected from across the five FQ Academy regional centres based in the Wide Bay, Central Coast, Whitsunday Coast, Northern and Far North & Gulf regions.
“Alongside these regional representatives, South East Queensland based players have also been selected from the FQ Academy QAS program and from eight NPL Queensland clubs.”
“The National Youth Championships form an important part of the national team pathway and provide a valuable development opportunity for the players who have been selected from around the state,” FQ Academy Director/QAS Head Coach Adam Pengelly said.
“After a successful tournament in 2019 and a two-year break from competition, we’re looking forward to again showcasing Queensland’s most talented young footballers on the national stage as the National Youth Championships for Girls return next month.
“This year’s squads feature a great depth of regional talent who will represent the state alongside some of the best young players from across South East Queensland.
“With a number of our FQ Academy players currently representing the country in the CommBank Junior Matildas squad at the AFF Under 18 Women’s Championship in Indonesia, the upcoming NYC tournament presents another great opportunity for our young Queenslanders to vie for selection in future national teams.”
The 2022 National Youth Championships for Girls will be held at C.ex Coffs International Stadium in Coffs Harbour from Monday, 19 September to Friday, 23 September.
