Football Queensland (FQ) is excited to announce the return of the Mitre FQPL Champions League for men in 2023 alongside the launch of a brand new Champions League Women’s competition featuring FQPL Women’s sides from the Far North to Wide Bay regions.
The expanded format of the Mitre FQPL Champions League for 2023 will also see the introduction of FQPL Whitsunday Coast Men’s and Women’s teams.
“Providing regional based competitions is a major part of Football Queensland’s 2023 – 2026 Strategic Plan, which outlines a focus on providing more opportunities for players to compete at a higher level and attain great quality competitive match minutes,” Andy Allan, FQ General Manager – Strategic Game Development & Referees, Clubs, Community said.
“Last year saw some brilliant football played across the state with the launch of the inaugural Mitre FQPL Champions League tournament, and people are still talking about how these types of games showcase our regional talent; we aim to continue to bring these opportunities, to our regional players, allowing them to reach success throughout the state and showcase their talents across the biggest stages.”
This year’s edition of the MItre FQPL Champions League Men will see the FQPL Far North & Gulf runners-up join Edge Hill United to represent the Far North & Gulf region after they gained automatic qualification for the 2023 tournament as last year’s regional winners.
Due to this, four teams have been submitted into the Men’s competition from the Northern, Far North & Gulf and Whitsunday Coast regions, and one competing from Central Coast and Wide Bay regions respectfully; the Northern region will follow a conference format whilst Central will feature two legs. (see table below)
The Mitre FQPL Champions League Women’s competition will follow the same overall format but with only one team submitted from each participating region as there is no returning regional winner, due to 2023 being the first edition of this competition.
The winner of the FQPL 1 Men’s and Women’s competitions will face the winner of the Regional Final in the MItre FQPL Champions League Final.
Opening round matches for the Mitre FQPL Champions League Men and Women competitions kick off over the weekend of May 26 for regions within the Northern conference and the weekend of June 30 for Central and Wide Bay regions, with venues and fixture details to be confirmed across regional Queensland.
