Football now has five finalists at the 2018 Queensland Sports Awards, after Brisbane Roar Women captain Clare Polkinghorne was today announced in the list of Sports Star of the Year finalists.
Polkinghorne joins her coach Mel Andreatta (Sport Coach of the Year), Tristram Peters (Athlete with a Disability), Jarred Gillett (Sport Officiator of the Year) and her Brisbane Roar’s Westfield W-League team (Sport Team of the Year) as football finalists for the 2018 awards, which will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre next Wednesday, 28 November.
In April this year, Polkinghorne was jointly awarded the Julie Dolan Award, the highest individual honour in Australian female football, alongside Perth Glory’s Samantha Kerr after an outstanding Westfield W-League 2017/18 season.
She played every minute of the Roar’s Premiership-winning campaign and was a standout in the side’s defence, conceding just 12 goals all season, and voted by her teammates as Players’ Player of the Year.
Polkinghorne was also outstanding at international level for Australia and in March, became just the sixth player to reach 100 caps for the Matildas in a 0-0 draw with Portugal at the Algarve Cup.
