Football Queensland (FQ) is pleased to announce the four nominees for the 2019 National Premier Leagues Women’s (NPLW) Queensland Player of the Year Award.
Mariel Hecher, Rylee Baisden, Ruth Blackburn and Cannon Clough have been nominated for the NPLW Queensland Player of the Year Award, which will be presented at the 2019 Football in Queensland Awards Night next month.
Lions FC captain Mariel Hecher led her side to the Premiership-Championship double in 2019 in a standout season for the team. Scoring a remarkable 21 goals in 22 matches, the tenacious winger appeared in the NPLW Queensland Team of the Week on six occasions and was selected in the 2019 Team of the Season.
2019 NPLW Queensland Golden Boot winner Rylee Baisden scored an incredible 33 goals in 24 matches to help Moreton Bay United to a top two finish and an appearance in the Grand Final. The dynamic attacker featured in the Team of the Week ten times to record the equal-most number of appearances in 2019. Baisden’s consistent quality form also helped her to selection in the NPLW Queensland Team of the Season.
The Gap FC’s Ruth Blackburn achieved the impressive feat of earning selection in the NPLW Queensland Team of the Season for the third year in a row in a fantastic 2019 season. The commanding Gap skipper led by example throughout the year, scoring 17 goals in 22 matches to make an appearance in the Team of the Week on seven occasions.
Lions FC’s Cannon Clough had a stellar debut season in the NPLW Queensland. The young left-back helped her side to the Premiership-Championship double thanks to her efforts in defence, while also scoring five goals and producing a number of assists throughout the year. Clough’s consistency in defence also contributed to her side conceding the competition’s least number of goals in the regular season, and earned her a Team of the Week appearance on six occasions, and a spot in the 2019 Team of the Season.
How players are nominated
As per the 2019 Competition Regulations, Player of the Year is awarded based on a combination of referee 3-2-1 votes, Team of the Season votes, and other reasonable justification such as overall team performance or disciplinary record.
A player is ineligible to win the Player of the Year Award if the player has been suspended as a result of receiving a direct red card in a match or as a result of a Disciplinary Committee Hearing or Match Review Panel, as stated in the 2019 Competition Regulations.
The 2019 Football in Queensland Awards Night will be held on Saturday, 2 November in the Grand Windsor Ballroom at the Pullman Hotel in Brisbane.
A variety of awards will be presented on the night, recognising the outstanding achievements of individuals and clubs at both community level and from FQ’s Premier competitions.
