Football Queensland (FQ) and Football Australia (FA) have today welcomed the letter of support signed by influential members of the CommBank Matildas, the Subway Socceroos and Brisbane Roar FC for the development of a Tier 2 rectangular stadium in central Brisbane as part of the legacy of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic & Paralympic Games.
The letter, issued to the Queensland Government by Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) and signed by 15 of Queensland’s most successful professional footballers including current CommBank Matildas Mackenzie Arnold, Tameka Yallop, Teagan Micah and Sharn Freier, confirms their support for the development of a Tier 2 rectangular stadium on behalf of all Australian national football teams and A-Leagues Men’s and Women’s players.
The letter of support follows the submission made by Football Queensland and Football Australia to the Queensland Government’s 100-Day Infrastructure Review Panel for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games on behalf of football, which was supported by key stakeholders across the global football community including APL, PFA, OFC, AFC, AFF, and Brisbane Roar FC.
“Football Queensland is thrilled to see our state’s most influential footballers confirming their support for the development of a Tier 2 stadium in Brisbane, which will help deliver a transformative legacy for Queensland as a crucial element of our whole-of-football submission to the 100-Day Infrastructure Review Panel,” FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said.
“We’re proud to have produced a carefully considered submission that aligns Games-time infrastructure requirements with long-term benefits for communities across the state through a strategic and master planned approach that will deliver best outcomes for City, the State and the Game, and are confident that we’ve put a strong case forward on behalf of football.
“Forming part of the submission, a Tier 2 stadium would deliver an enduring legacy not only for football but for the city as a financially sustainable and fan-focused venue, hosting over 100 pieces of semi-professional and community football content in addition to domestic and international football fixtures.
“The feedback received from government to date has been reassuringly positive, with our submission quality praised including a subsequent request for further information, and we look forward to the outcome of the 100-day infrastructure review report to be released later this month.”
Football Australia CEO James Johnson emphasised the importance of securing high-quality football infrastructure in Brisbane, highlighting the long-term benefits for the sport at all levels.
“Football Australia welcomes the strong show of support from our national team players and professional footballers in Queensland for the development of a Tier 2 rectangular stadium in Brisbane.
“Football is the most played and participated sport in Queensland and across Australia, and the development of this stadium is a crucial step in ensuring our sport continues to thrive at all levels. This stadium will not only enhance the match-day experience for fans but also serve as a long-term legacy for football, providing high-quality infrastructure for our national teams, A-League clubs, and grassroots players. We commend the support shown by our players, whose voices reinforce the necessity of this development, and we look forward to working with all stakeholders to bring this vision to life,” Johnson concluded.
In addition to outlining support for a Tier 2 rectangular stadium, the letter also confirms the players’ support for the development of suitable training site infrastructure to accommodate participating teams during the Olympic Football Tournaments, and to serve the vast football community in Queensland following their completion in line with football’s submission.
