Football Queensland is delighted to confirm the appointment of former Matilda and A-League Women’s player Gema Simon, who commenced in the role of Participation Officer – Northern last month.
Bringing first-hand experience from the highest levels of the game, Simon said she was looking forward to connecting with the Northern football community to create more opportunities for participants of all skill levels to enjoy football.
“I am fortunate to have had a career as a professional footballer for 17 years and along the way as a player I have had opportunities to give back to the community and help guide the next generation of players,” Simon said.
“My new role allows me to continue to do these things that I am passionate about and look at new ways to help create more opportunities for people to get involved at all levels of football.
“Football has a way of bringing people together and it is really rewarding to be a part of it all.”
Craig Ramage, Football Queensland’s General Manager – Northern Region, said Simon’s appointment would help to increase the accessibility of football in the region, delivering benefits to participants of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels.
“Gema joins us with an outstanding football resume and a genuine passion for growing the game at every level,” Ramage said.
“She has built an impressive portfolio across sports development, leadership, and community engagement and has been a strong advocate for Indigenous participation in football, championing inclusion, cultural awareness, and pathways that ensure the game is accessible to all.
“Gema’s playing career reflects professionalism, resilience, and leadership – qualities that will greatly benefit our Northern region – and we look forward to seeing the impact she can make in her new role as Participation Officer.”
